What Is Trauma?
“Trauma” describes the emotional and physiological response to deeply distressing experiences such as abuse, accidents, natural disasters, military or first-responder exposure, medical events, loss, or chronic stress. Trauma isn’t defined only by what happened; it’s also defined by how your nervous system had to adapt to get you through it. Those adaptations (like hypervigilance, numbing, or avoidance) are brilliant survival strategies, but over time, they can interfere with sleep, relationships, work, and a sense of safety.
Trauma can be a single event (acute trauma), repeated exposure (chronic trauma), or early-life experiences that shaped development (complex trauma). No matter the origin, healing is possible with the right support.
How Does Trauma Affect My Mental Health?
Trauma can show up in many ways, including:
- Intrusive memories, nightmares, or flashbacks
- Feeling constantly “on alert,” easily startled, or emotionally numb
- Anxiety, panic, or depressive symptoms
- Guilt, shame, or self-blame that won’t let up
- Trouble concentrating, sleeping, or staying present
- Strain in relationships such as pulling away or feeling misunderstood
- Physical signs of distress such as headaches, muscle tension, GI issues, or fatigue
If you’re a veteran, service member, first responder, or an adult who endured difficult childhood experiences, these reactions can be especially intense due to repeated exposure to high-stress events. None of this means you’re “broken.” It means your body and brain learned to keep you safe. Counseling for trauma helps you update those patterns so you can feel like yourself again.
What Happens During Trauma Therapy?
Trauma therapy moves at your pace. We begin by building safety and clarity, helping you understand what you’re experiencing and giving you practical strategies to steady your nervous system. From there, we use targeted, research-supported approaches to process and resolve the roots of distress.
Depending on your goals, your therapist may integrate:
- EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing). Helps the brain reprocess stuck traumatic memories so they feel truly “in the past.”
- Brainspotting. Uses focused attention and eye position to access and release trauma stored in the nervous system.
- Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). Strengthens secure connection within yourself and in your relationships, reducing conflict and isolation.
- Somatic and mindfulness-based strategies. Teach body-based regulation, grounding, and self-compassion.
- DBT- and parts-informed tools (e.g., DNMS concepts). Build skills for emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and integrating protective parts.
Every session is collaborative and transparent. You’ll know why we’re using a method and how it supports your treatment plan.
